The park is located in the Central Kalimantan province; Kalimantan refers to Indonesian part of Borneo – third largest island in the world. The island of Borneo is divided among three countries: Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia. Approximately 73% of the island is Indonesian territory (Kalimantan). Central Kalimantan is the biggest province of the island, it occupies an area of approximately 153,800 km2, most of it is jungle, swamps, rivers and agriculture land. The Tanjung Puting National Park was primarily established by the Dutch colonial government for the protection of the orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus) and Proboscis monkey (Nasalis larvatus) in the 1930’s. It was designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1977 and a national park in 1982. Tanjung Puting National Park is important refuge for Borneo wildlife, it is probably best known for the work done there on researching and rehabilitating orangutans at a centre which became a central visitor attraction. In the afternoon you may observe Proboscis monkeys along the river banks. Proboscis monkeys are the endemic and can be seen only in Borneo.
